Attaching Timers to Tasks and Projects

Intervals timers are organized at three levels: generalproject, or task. Sometimes you need to get a timer going right away and track down the project or task later. Attaching a timer to a project or task while it is still running means you can start tracking time immediately and organize it whenever it is convenient, without having to stop and search before you begin. Assignments can be changed at any time without stopping the timer.

Note: This feature is available in the newer Intervals theme.

Timer States at a Glance

  • General Timer
A running timer with no project or task attached
  • Project Timer
A running timer attached to a specific project
  • Task Timer
A running timer attached to a specific task (and its project)

You can move a timer up or down this hierarchy freely while it is still running.

Assigning a General Timer to a Project

If you have a general timer running and want to associate it with a project before applying it:

  1. Click the menu icon on the timer in the dock.
  2. Select Assign to project.
  3. In the modal that opens, choose a project from the dropdown.
  4. Click Assign.

The timer will update to show the project name and is now a Project Timer.

Assigning a Timer to a Task

You can assign either a general timer or a project timer to a specific task.

  1. Click the menu icon on the timer in the dock.
  2. Select Assign to task.
  3. In the modal that opens:
    • Select a project from the first dropdown (this filters the available tasks).
    • Select a task from the second dropdown.
  4. Click Assign.

The timer will update to show the task number and title (e.g., #42: Design mockups) and is now a Task Timer.

Reassigning a Timer to a Different Project or Task

You can reassign a timer that is already attached to a project or task.

Move a Project Timer to a Different Project

  1. Click the menu icon on the project timer.
  2. Select Reassign to different project.
  3. Choose the new project and click Reassign.

Move a Task Timer to a Different Task

  1. Click the menu icon on the task timer.
  2. Select Reassign to different task.
  3. Select the project and task, then click Reassign.

Reverting a Timer

You can remove an assignment from a timer without stopping it.

Revert a Task Timer to a Project Timer

  1. Click the menu icon on the task timer.
  2. Select Revert to project timer.

The task assignment is removed and the timer returns to project-level.

Revert a Project Timer or Task Timer to a General Timer

  1. Click the menu icon on the timer.
  2. Select Revert to general timer.

All project and task assignments are cleared and the timer becomes a general timer again.

Applying Time from an Assigned Timer

When you apply the timer, the form will be pre-filled based on the timer’s assignment level:

  • Task Timer
The project and task are locked in. The time entry is applied directly to that task.
  • Project Timer
The project is locked in. You can choose from tasks and modules within that project, or leave the task field blank to log general time.
  • General Timer
The full form is shown. You can choose any client, project, module, and task.

Timer Menu Reference

  • General Timer
Options: Assign to project, assign to task, delete
  • Project Timer
Options: Reassign to different project, assign to task, revert to general timer, delete
  • Task Timer
Options: Reassign to different task, revert to project timer, revert to general timer, delete

Tips

  • Assigning a timer to a task automatically associates it with that task’s project — you do not need to assign the project separately first.
  • The timer dock displays the task title (with task number) and/or project name so you can see at a glance what each running timer is tracking.
  • You can have multiple timers running at once, each assigned to a different project or task.
