How to use Google App Passwords with the POP/IMAP queue

A customer asked the following question:

I am having trouble connecting a POP/IMAP with my Gmail account, everything is enabled on my end however I still cannot get it to connect.

Using Gmail with POP/IMAP in Intervals

Due to recent security updates by Google, setting up Gmail with the POP/IMAP request queue is slightly more involved. Google no longer supports traditional username and password logins from third-party apps like Intervals (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255). To use the POP/IMAP request queue, an App Password is required.
